French Spring

RS012 giclee s/n (16x20")(unframed) $200

I love French Impressionist painting and it has been the greatest influence on my artwork.
One day I found a black and white photo of a woman in her garden, and I wanted to approach
the piece with the idea that everything would be painted in the same manner. I had also
learned in my studies that some Impressionist painters used color directly from the tube,
and wanted to use that effect as I imagined the black and white photo colorfully coming to life.

When it was done, for whatever reason, I didn’t appreciate the results and even wanted
to throw it out. My sister, who says she’s my biggest fan, salvaged it and has kept it
all these years. Unfortunately, it was stored in her garage for so long that it ended up
sustaining lots of dirt and even flood damage. During a visit in 2009, I had a chance
to see my artworks that she has kept -- like seeing old friends again. I also was better able
to appreciate the work I had done in the past.

And then she brought out “French Spring,” dirty and so long forgotten. As the dirt came off,
the brilliant colors came through, and I was really elated to see it again. I also appreciate
that my sister had the foresight to save it so that I can now share it with you.
