"Incoming" |
Each winter, some of the world’s biggest waves roll in to the North Shore of Oahu with breathtaking beauty and power.
Here, on the metropolitan side of the island, we occasionally experience some higher swells, to the delight of all the town-side surfers. I took some shots during one particular bump which yielded this piece. Here, the surfer keeps his eye out for the next big one. (Now I’m no surfer, but it looks like it’s on the way!)

highlights some scenes of Hawaii, as
well as showcases work in other genres.
In "about," you can
find out more about me and some of the exhibitions that my
work has been in. My good friend Roland,
working more in a traditional Impressionistic style, offers his
views of Hawaii as well.

"Fire and Sea" |
Kilauea ("spewing" or "much spreading" in Hawaiian) is considered one of the most active volcanoes in the world -
much to the delight of visitors to the Big Island (Hawai'i Island). This "young" volcano is also the home of the Hawaiian
goddess, Pele.
At times, the lava flows about 30 miles to the Pacific Ocean resulting in a steamy inferno that eventually produces the
black sand found on nearby beaches. I was drawn to the beautiful interplay of fire and water of the dramatic nighttime
flows. |

"Hawaiian Twilight" |
| If a visitor to Waikiki were to turn their attention away from the Pacific toward the mountains (mauka), they would
see the leeward side of the Ko'olau Range. Like the famous Diamond Head, Ko'olau is the remnant of a long extinct
volcano that helped form Oahu Island. From outside my studio, I've had many spectacular sunset views through the palms,
as captured in this painting. |

“Pacifc Pyrotechniques No. 1”
Each June, the Royal Cosmetics Company of Japan holds a convention in Waikiki that includes a public fireworks display.
Usually, I miss them because I don’t know when they are planned, but this year I finally made it to the beach just in time.
I was most impressed with the coloration of the smoke against the inky night sky, and the bright reflections in the
waves of the Pacific Ocean.

"Ka'iulani I" | "Ka'iulani II" |
| Princess Ka'iulani (Victoria Ka'iulani Kalaninuiahilapalapa Kawekiu i Lunalilo Cleghorn) was known as the
"Peacock Princess" for the number of those birds on her estate of 'Ainahau in what is now Waikiki. She is the subject
of a 2010 film, originally and controversially named "Barbarian Princess." The film details how this stereotyped,
exotic princess actually charmed Americans and Europeans during her short life. |

I’m pretty sure this is from the June 2009 photo shoot at Magic Island which also resulted in “Incoming.” This early morning shot silhouettes
Diamond Head in the background as the waves break along the eastern edge of Ala Moana Beach Park.

“Mokoli'i Island, Oahu”
Commonly referred to as Chinaman’s Hat because of its conical shape, this famous landmark is on the windward side of Oahu. At one time, it was
connected to the main island, and only a few feet of water covers the remnants of that connection.
ETH-1489 Original oil 16x20" (unframed stretched canvas) $1100

"Hanalei Valley, Kaua'i" |
Kaua'i Island's north shore features Hanalei Bay, the lovely backdrop in the 1958 musical "South Pacific" - and the
legendary home to Peter Paul and Mary's "Puff the Magic Dragon."
But glance toward the mountains again and you would see the rich farmlands of Hanalei Valley. This view is from
a roadside lookout just outside of Princeville, Kaua'i.

One of the most popular tourist attractions on the island is this bay formed from the remnants of an ancient volcanic cone. The dynamite pitted reef is a backdrop for some of the best snorkeling around.
